Setting up dynamic Ethernet (DHCP) on a macOS computer

Most of the time when you plug your computer into Ethernet on campus, you will use a dynamically created Internet address, also known as a DHCP connection. Your computer should automatically do this, but if it doesn't, use the instructions below to manually set it up.

Note: DO NOT use these instructions if you are off campus and use an Ethernet connection with your outside Internet Service Provider (ISP). Doing so will prevent you from connecting to the Internet. Contact your Internet Service Provider for configuration information.

1. Open Apple > System Preferences > Internet and Wireless > Network
2. Select Ethernet from the left pane that lists connection services
3. Create a new location:
   1. Select Edit Locations… from the Location: drop-down list. If this option is grayed out, you may need to click the lock icon at the bottom-left of the Network window.
   2. Click the + and type NU Dynamic Ethernet in the new field, then click Done.
      
4. Select NU Dynamic Ethernet from the Location: drop-down list.
5. Select Using DHCP from the Configure IPv4: drop-down list.
6. Click Apply and close System Preferences.
