Enabling someone to send to a listserv but not receive messages

Often, VIPs are added as owners of a listserv so they can send messages to lists which are locked down. If a VIP don't actually need owner responsibilities, you can add them as a Special Sender. Special Senders don't need to be owners or even subscribers to be able to send messages to a listserv; they're exempt from the normal sender rules. If you add a VIP as a Special Sender, you can unsubscribe them from the list and remove them as owners so they don't receive unnecessary emails.

  1. Log in to the Northwestern Listserv Web Interface at https://listserv.it.northwestern.edu .
  2. On the top menu bar, click List Management.
  3. From the dropdown menu, hover over List Configuration and click List Configuration Tasks.
  4. Under Select List, choose the list you want to manage.
  5. Click on the Security tab.
  6. Scroll down to the Send= section, and find the Special box.
  7. Enter the email addresses of the VIPs you want to be Special Senders here.
  8. Once you've set the desired send level, scroll to the bottom and click Save.
If your VIPs do actually need owner rights so they can modify the listserv configuration, but you don't want them to receive automated messages, you can make them Quiet Owners. Quiet Owners have all of the abilities of an owner, without receiving automated messages.  You can add a Quiet Owner using the following steps:
  5. In the Administrator tab, find the Owner= section, and the Quiet: box.
  6. Enter the email addresses of the VIPs in the Quiet: box to make them Quiet Owners.
If you're going to make your VIPs Quiet Owners or Special Senders, make sure to remove their email addresses from the Owners section, and unsubscribe them from the list if you don't want them to receive listserv emails.
