Modern Authentication FAQ

Common questions regarding the use of multi-factor authentication with Office 365 email.

What is the recommended approach for Linux users with respect to affected Modern Authentication clients?

Northwestern IT recommends and supports Outlook Web App for Linux users. Should you prefer a client solution, it is the responsibility of schools and departments to select and support a usable client. An alpha version of Thunderbird appears to support modern authentication. However, Northwestern Information Technology will not provide support for this software.

Will IMAP continue to be supported?

IMAP clients have traditionally used basic authentication and will no longer be supported. However, support for IMAP via OAUTH2 authentication has been enabled in Office 365 by Microsoft as of April 30, 2020. As noted above, various IMAP clients are beginning to support modern authentication protocols.

Are there any specific operating system version requirements for Modern Authentication?

Yes, Northwestern IT supports these operating system versions for modern authentication:

  • Windows 10
  • macOS Catalina (v 10.15)

School and department IT staff may establish their own guidelines for support. For those scenarios, you should work with your local IT.
