Step 1: Install the Browser Extension
To begin using 1Password in your browser, install the extension from the official site:
Download the 1Password Browser Extension
Select your current browser from the download page.

This guide uses Microsoft Edge as an example, but the process is nearly identical in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Brave.

Click Get to install the extension.

Click Add extension to confirm installation.
Step 2: Sign In with SSO
Click ‘Continue’ to Proceed here.

No need to create a new account manually as you have already activated your account.
Click Sign in under “Add account” to begin SSO login.

Choose Your Northwestern Account
Here you will see an account listed based on your department/school affiliation.
Go ahead and click on the account that is listed.

Sign in with Microsoft

Click ‘Sign in with Microsoft’
Complete Duo authentication to finish signing in, if needed.
Step 3: Optional Tutorial

You can choose to:
- Go through the tutorial to learn key features
- Skip it if you’re already familiar — you’re all set!
Step 4: Pin 1Password to Your Browser Toolbar
Pin via Extensions Menu

- Click the puzzle piece icon in the top right
- Find 1Password – Password Manager
- Click the pin icon to keep it visible

This ensures quick access to autofill, password suggestions, and saved items.
Importing Items into 1Password
Once you've finished setting up the 1Password browser extension, it becomes your browser’s default password manager.
- The built-in browser password manager (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Safari) will no longer prompt you to save or autofill passwords
- Previously saved passwords in your browser will not automatically transfer to 1Password
What You Should Do
To ensure a seamless transition, import your saved passwords into 1Password:

- Once imported, 1Password will handle all autofill and password saving going forward
