Setting up static Ethernet on Windows

This document explains how to configure a static Ethernet connection on Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 computers.

Note: Static Ethernet connections are needed if your office or lab machine uses a static IP address.

Most offices use dynamic IP addresses. Please check with your technical support personnel for the correct IP address settings and options.

  1. Open the Start menu, select Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center. If you do not see the Control Panel listed, search for it by typing after opening the Start menu.
  2. Click Change adapter settings.
  3. Right-click Local Area Connection, then select Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click Properties. A window similar to the following appears:
    1. Select Use the following IP address.
      • Type the IP address supplied to you in the IP Address: field.
      • Type 255.255.255.0 (or the provided subnet mask) in the Subnet mask: field.
    2. Select Use the following DNS server addresses.
      • Type 129.105.49.1 in the Preferred DNS server: field.
      • Type 165.124.49.21 in the Alternate DNS server: field.
  5. Click the Advanced... button.
  6. Select the DNS tab. A window similar to the following appears:
    1. Select  Append these DNS suffixes (in order).
    2. Click the Add... button that is below the Append these DNS suffixes (in order):radio button.
      • Type it.northwestern.edu into the Domain suffix field, then click the Add button.
    3. Click the Add... button that is below the Append these DNS suffixes (in order):radio button.
      • Type northwestern.edu into the Domain suffix field, then click the Add button.
  7. Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
  8. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  9. Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
