If you receive the error "The SCEP server returned an invalid response" while installing the Northwestern eduroam configuration profile on an iPhone or iPad, follow the steps below.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure the device is connected to cellular data during enrollment.
  • Do not use eduroam or another Northwestern Wi-Fi network while completing these steps.

Step 1: Remove Existing Northwestern Profiles and Certificates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Navigate to GeneralVPN & Device Management.
  3. Remove any existing Northwestern-related profiles, including:
    • Previous Northwestern profiles
    • Old SecureW2 profiles
    • Existing eduroam certificates

Step 2: Clear Safari Session Data

  1. Close all open Safari tabs.
  2. Open SettingsSafari.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.

This removes stale authentication sessions that can interfere with certificate enrollment.


Step 3: Restart the Enrollment Process

  1. Using Safari, browse to the Northwestern Network Configuration portal:
  2. Select Configure this device.
  3. Follow the enrollment prompts to install the new configuration profile and certificate.
