Audio Recording in Swift 228B
Summary
Instructions for setting up microphones for an audio recording session in the Swift 228B sound booth
Body
Select the Shure SM27 or the headmounted WH20 microphone from the file cabinet
If using the Shure SM27, attach the microphone shock mount to the mic stand and place the SM27 mic with into the shock mount with the "Shure" logo facing you.
Connect the XLR cable to the microphone
If using the SM27, position the windscreen in front of the mic (between the microphone and participant). The windscreen helps reduce plosives for cleaner audio recordings.
Start up the two iMac computers
The M4 MOTU audio interfaces should start automatically
If not, check the back of the MOTU devices and ensure that the power toggle is set to the "on" position
On both iMacs, go to System Preferences->Sound and set the input and output sound devices to "M4"
Launch "Sound Studio" app on the left iMac. Navigate to the app preferences panel.
In the Audio section, select M4 under "Input" and "Output".
On the Input side, set "Left" to "1" and "Right" to "2".
To begin a new recording session
File -> New Mono File (for single channel recordings)
File -> New (for stereo recordings with trigger channel)
Open the Input Levels window: Window -> Input Levels
Press record in Sound Studio to begin recording
Speak into the microphone and adjust the trim controls on the M4 while watching SoundStudio's input levels window
The "left" recording level should be within the green/orange range. Avoid recording at levels that are too low (blue) or too high (red).
