If your University-owned computer is managed by your department, you may not need to set up GlobalProtect. If you see the GlobalProtect icon in your system tray, skip the set-up instructions and go directly to the Connect to GlobalProtect section. If you don't have administrative rights to your University-owned computer to install software, contact your departmental tech support personnel.

Set up GlobalProtect
- Download the GlobalProtect installation package
- In top left corner, click on the download arrow to download the globalprotect_install.zip file to your computer. If your window is too small, the download arrow is hidden under the three-dot menu.

- From your computer's Downloads folder, right click on globalprotect_install.zip, choose Extract All...
Note: you will need to extract the zip file before you can proceed with the installation. Clicking on the installation files when they are still in the zip file will result in failed installation.
- Accept the defaults in the Extract Folder window
- In the folder that contains the extracted files, double-click on globalprotect_install.bat (NOT on GlobalProtect64x.msi)
Note: You
must use the
globalprotect_install.bat file to install GlobalProtect. If you click and install via the GlobalProtect64x.msi file, the installation will not be configured correctly.
If you are prompted with a system Security Warning window, click the
Run button to proceed.

- In the GlobalProtect Setup Wizard window, click the Next button and follow the installation instructions

- Once installation is complete, find and click on the
GlobalProtect icon in your system tray.
You may need to click the Show/Hide Icons button (^) in the lower right of your screen.

- In the Welcome! pop-up window, click Get Started

- Enter vpn-connect.northwestern.edu in the Portal field, then click the Connect button

- Your default web-browser will open and direct you to enter your NetID and NetID password. Follow the steps to verify with with Duo multi-factor authentication. Once complete you will see an Authentication Complete window in your browser. You are now connected to GlobalProtect

Connect to GlobalProtect
- click on the
GlobalProtect icon in your system tray.
You may need to click the Show/Hide Icons button (^) in the lower right of your screen.

- Click the Connect button. If nothing seems to happen when you click Connect, see Fixing when clicking Connect in GlobalProtect VPN for Windows does nothing

- Your default web-browser will open and direct you to enter your NetID and NetID password. Follow the steps to verify with with Duo multi-factor authentication. Once complete you will see an Authentication Complete window in your browser. You are now connected to GlobalProtect
Disconnect from Global Protect
- To disconnect, click the GlobalProtect icon again in your system tray, then click the Disconnect button.
