Panopto Access AI: AI Chapters and AI Summaries

Overview 

Panopto Access AI provides artificial intelligence-powered features that make videos easier to navigate and review. When enabled, Access AI can automatically generate: 

• AI Chapters: A table of contents that helps viewers jump to specific topics in a recording. 

• AI Summaries: A summary of the recording, including key points and an overview of the content. These features are created from a video's automatic captions and are available on eligible Panopto videos. 

Note: Both features are optional and must be enabled for use by a user with Creator permissions for the video before Viewers can use these features. They must also be enabled on a video-by-video basis and cannot be applied globally.  
 

Benefits of Access AI 

AI Chapters and AI Summaries can help: 

• Quickly locate specific topics in long recordings. 

• Review lectures and presentations more efficiently. 

• Improve content discoverability. 

• Provide viewers with an overview before watching a video. 

• Support learning and accessibility. 
   

Enable AI Chapters 

AI Chapters automatically create a table of contents that allows viewers to navigate directly to topics within a video. To enable: 

1. Open the video in Panopto. 

2. Select Edit. 

3. Open the Contents tab. 

4. Locate Generate Smart Chapters or Show Smart Chapters. 

5. Select Generate (if available) or enable Smart Chapters. 

6. Wait for processing to complete. 

Once generated, chapter entries will appear in the video's table of contents.  
 

Edit AI Chapters 

After chapters are generated, you can: 

• Edit chapter titles. 

• Delete individual chapters. 

• Add your own table of contents entries. 

• Hide or show AI-generated chapters. 

Open the Contents tab in the editor and select the chapter you wish to modify.  
 

Enable AI Summaries 

AI Summaries provide viewers with a quick overview of the recording. Panopto generates: 

• Key Points: A short, bulleted summary of major topics. 

• AI Recast: A more detailed summary describing the content of the recording.  
   

Generate AI Summaries 

For videos where Access AI is enabled: 

1. Verify that the video has automatic captions. 

2. Allow Panopto processing to complete after the recording is uploaded. 

3. Open the video and review the generated summary content. 

If the video was created before Access AI was enabled: 

1. Open the video's Settings. 

2. Select the Manage tab. 

3. Choose Re-encode Access AI. 

4. Wait for processing to complete. 
    

Edit AI Summaries 

Creators can edit generated summaries and key points: 

1. Open the video in the Panopto Editor. 

2. Navigate to the Access AI content. 

3. Review the generated text. 

4. Make any necessary edits and save.
