Feinberg - Connecting to the FSMResFiles Server

The shared network drives for Feinberg are all stored on the FSMResFiles server. Use the instructions below to connect (or re-connect) to these drives. Please note that if you are on a wireless connection or connecting from off campus you will need to first connect to the Northwestern VPN in order to connect to these drives.

Connecting on Windows

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar
  2. Right-click This PC. A contextual menu will appear. Within the menu select, Map Network Drive...
  3. A new dialog window will appear. Where it says "Drive" in the window, select the letter 'R'. This will mount the new FSMResFiles Server with the letter 'R'. Under the "Folder" portion of the window, type in the following server path: \\fsmresfiles.fsm.northwestern.edu\fsmresfiles
  4. Place checkmarks in the left-hand boxes next to Reconnect at logon and Connect using different credentials and click Finish.
    • "Reconnect at logon" will maintain that the server is mounted automatically to your machine when you log in using your NetID and NetID password.
    • The 'Connect using different credentials' box is selected just this once to force the logon process to ask for your NetID and password.

  5. A new dialog window will appear asking for your NetID and password.
  6. For the initial logon to the FSMResFiles server, you will need to put FSM\ in front of your NetID (ex. FSM\abc1234). Enter in your NetID password
  7. Check off the box next to Remember my credentials to ensure that you will not be prompted with your NetID and password the next time you log into your machine. Click OK. This will mount the new server onto your computer. Once you have the server mounted to your computer, you can 'drill-down' through the folders to locate your data.
  8. You should only have to perform this process once, but if for any reason that you become disconnected from the server you can go through this process again to manually reconnect to the FSMResFiles server.
  9. If you have any questions concerning logging onto the FSMResFiles server, please send them to fsmhelp@northwestern.edu.
  10. PLEASE NOTE: If you are using a wireless connection, you will need to launch a VPN client and log into NU's VPN network, in order to gain access to the FSMResFiles server.  This also applies if you are connecting from another school within NU, anywhere 'off-site', and/or from home.  An established VPN connection needs to be made, prior to connecting to the FSMResFiles server.
If you don't have a VPN client set up on your machine, you can go to the following URL for instructions on how to set it up.  It is a fairly straightforward setup process. GlobalProtect VPN on Windows or GlobalProtect VPN on macOS.

  11. If you are connecting to the server from a machine that is not part of the FSM Domain (network), you will need to put FSM\ in front of your NetID, in the 'username' portion of the logon window (ex - FSM\abc123). Examples of machines that are NOT part of the FSM Domain include personal machines or machines on campus where the user does not log in with their Northwestern NetID.

Connecting on macOS

  1. First, make sure you are at the Desktop of your Mac computer. Click the Go Menu at the top left corner of the Desktop and select Connect to Server...
The dropdown menu in Finder that appears under the word GO. The last option in the menu is highlighted, which says Connect to Server
  2. Within the 'Connect to Server' window, copy and paste the following address into the 'Server Address' portion of the window: smb://fsmresfiles.fsm.northwestern.edu/fsmresfiles
  3. Once you have the FSMResFiles server address entered into the window, click Connect. A new dialog window will appear asking for your NetID and password. If you are using a Mac that is part of the FSM Domain (meaning you use your NetID and password to log into the machine) then you will enter in your NetID and password.
  4. If you are using a Mac that is not part of the FSM Domain, or your own personal machine, then you need to put FSM\ (backslash) in front of your NetID, when entering a logon name within the credentials window. It should look like the following: FSM\NetID
  5. Once you have entered your NetID and password into the credentials window, click Connect. This will mount the FSMResFiles server onto your Mac. Depending how your Mac is set up, the server will appear on the Desktop, within Finder, or both.
