Feinberg IT provides a shared network drive (FSMResFiles) for departments to store sensitive data. FSMResFiles may also be referred to as the Research drive, the R drive, or the shared drive. FSMResFiles is encrypted, backed up for the last 30 days, and secured by permission based access. FSMResFiles can only be accessed by computers/devices connected to on-campus Ethernet or to the Northwestern VPN.
Sharing files with external users such as a collaborator at another institution, vendor, etc.
If you are sharing files or data with an external institution, please ensure all regulatory approvals are in place, such as IRB, Sponsored Research, Office of General Counsel, as applicable.
Sharing OneDrive files or SharePoint files with external users (guests) allows you to securely collaborate with people outside of Northwestern University such as your academic colleagues at other Universities, partners, vendors, or others— with or without a Microsoft account. Sharing via FSMResFiles is only allowed on a case-by-case basis requiring Dean’s office approval. Please refer to this Knowledge Base article for instructions on sharing with external users.
