Transferring and sharing data is a critical component of data workflows. Globus allows users to efficiently transfer data among storage systems, automate data management tasks, and securely share data.
Features and Benefits
Globus allows researchers to
- Access Northwestern-supported storage systems like Quest, Research Data Storage Service (RDSS, resfiles and resfilesaudit), FSMResfiles, OneDrive/SharePoint, and Amazon S3 using Northwestern managed collections.
- Initiate and schedule transfers using a point-and-click web interface.
- Maximize network bandwidth and prevent connectivity problems.
- Automatically resume interrupted or failed transfers.
- Assure data integrity by comparing checksums at the end of the transfer.
- Transfer data to and from your computer to other storage systems using Globus Connect Personal.
- Securely transfer personally identifiable data (PII) and protected health information (PHI) using high assurance collections.
- Share data with anyone with a Globus account using guest collections.
- Automate data management tasks as part of your research workflow using Globus’s command line interface and API.
See the Globus documentation for more details.
Limitations
The following limitations apply to the Globus service:
- Legally and contractually restricted data should not be transferred using standard Northwestern Globus collections.
- Northwestern’s Globus service is not approved to transfer data subject to NIST SP 800-171. To use Globus with this type of data, see Available Options for Regulated Research.
- Not all Globus collections allow the creation of guest collections. See Sharing Data in the Globus documentation for more information.
Available to
- Northwestern researchers including students, faculty, staff, and postdocs.

After logging into Globus and these collections, you will be able to access your data in the following services (access to each service is required):
- Quest: Files in your home and scratch directories and any allocation you have access to
- Research Data Storage Service (RDSS): Files in all RDSS shares you have access to
- FSMResFiles: all folders that you have configured for access to Globus
- OneDrive: All files in your OneDrive and files that are shared with you
- SharePoint: Libraries that you have access to and have been added as a “Favorite”
- Amazon S3: All S3 buckets that identity associated with credentials you used has access to
