Research Computing Cloud

Research Computing and Data Services (RCDS) offers guidance to Northwestern researchers exploring the use of public cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Our cloud consultants provide short, focused consultations to help you:

  • Understand how to request and manage a Northwestern-affiliated cloud account
  • Evaluate whether cloud is a good fit based on your project's needs and constraints
  • Navigate available services, including computing, storage, and database options
  • Apply best practices for cloud architecture, security, and compliance
  • Identify cost-effective strategies that align with your research and funding

These consultations are ideal for developing a cloud strategy, reviewing technical requirements, or comparing available options. While RCDS does not build or manage cloud environments on your behalf, we offer guidance throughout the decision-making and onboarding process.

Public Cloud Options

Northwestern has institutional agreements with AWS, Azure, and GCP that provide pricing discounts, consolidated billing, and streamlined procurement. These benefits are only available through affiliated cloud accounts.

Researchers may use cloud platforms for a variety of scenarios, including:

  • General-purpose and high-performance computing
  • Long-term or short-term data storage
  • On-demand interactive computing (e.g., Jupyter, RStudio)
  • Managed databases or serverless tools
  • Access to LLMs and other AI models, including Azure OpenAI services.

To learn more about available public cloud resources, visit our Public Cloud Services pages, or request a consultation with a cloud specialist to discuss options.

Cost

There is no cost for consultations. Public cloud providers offer resources with a pay-as-you-go model, meaning you are billed for what you consume on a monthly basis.
