NUworkspace offers users a virtual Windows desktop service that provides access to a suite of many software applications to faculty, students, and staff with, including access to software packages that may not be readily available on their desktop/laptop computers. NUworkspace is intended for occasional interactive use and is not configured for scheduled or batch jobs. Access is available through a secure web interface. NUworkspace is a cloud-based solution provided by the vendor Apporto managed by Weinberg College on behalf of Northwestern.
Once connected, a user can access files in cloud-based storage (e.g., OneDrive, SharePoint, and Google Drive) or Research Data Storage Services (RDSS) using the Cloud Mounter feature, process those files in the virtual desktop, and save the results back to the cloud-based storage location. One can also upload and download files directly from the environment; however, the service saves only basic desktop configuration settings and is not intended for long-term data storage. Data saved to the environment may be removed periodically and without notice.
