Audio Recording in Swift 228B

  • Select the Shure SM27 or the headmounted WH20 microphone from the file cabinet
    • If using the Shure SM27, attach the microphone shock mount to the mic stand and place the SM27 mic with into the shock mount with the "Shure" logo facing you.

  • Connect the XLR cable to the microphone
  • If using the SM27, position the windscreen in front of the mic (between the microphone and participant). The windscreen helps reduce plosives for cleaner audio recordings.
  • Start up the two iMac computers
  • The M4 MOTU audio interfaces should start automatically
    • If not, check the back of the MOTU devices and ensure that the power toggle is set to the "on" position

  • On both iMacs, go to System Preferences->Sound and set the input and output sound devices to "M4"
  • Launch "Sound Studio" app on the left iMac. Navigate to the app preferences panel.
    • In the Audio section, select M4 under "Input" and "Output".
    • On the Input side, set "Left" to "1" and "Right" to "2".

  • To begin a new recording session
    • File -> New Mono File (for single channel recordings)
    • File -> New (for stereo recordings with trigger channel)

  • Open the Input Levels window: Window -> Input Levels

  • Press record in Sound Studio to begin recording
  • Speak into the microphone and adjust the trim controls on the M4 while watching SoundStudio's input levels window

  • The "left" recording level should be within the green/orange range. Avoid recording at levels that are too low (blue) or too high (red).
