Requesting funds for a Prolific study
Body
The linguistics department maintains a department credit card to fund your Prolific account.
Check with your advisor for the appropriate funding source for your web experiment. This could be a faculty grant, a discretionary funds or even a grant that was awarded directly to the student researcher such as department graduate research grants and TGS research grants.
Most of these funding sources will have a associated "chart string", a unique string of letters and numbers that identifies the funding source. If you know your chart string, please send that along with your request for funds.
To determine how much funds you will need to pay your participants through Prolific, log into
Prolific
and select your study.
Scroll down to the "Recruit participants" section and enter your target total number of participants.
The number of participants requested here should be fall within a range that can be completed within 30 days. It is a good idea to note the pace at which you plan to run yoru study and adjust the initial number of participants accordingly. Consider running a smaller number of participants if you're not sure how quickly your experiment will progress as you can always
add more participants
later.
Scroll down to "Study cost". Enter the study duration in minutes and the desired amount that each participant will be paid to complete the task.
The rate calculator in Prolific will let you know if you are paying above or below minimum wage.
Make a note of the total amount needed.
The indicated VAT fee should be $0.00 (value added tax is not applicable in the US).
If that is not the case, you will need to visit the Prolific settings and enter a US address under "Legal identity".
Send an email to speechresearch@northwestern.edu with the following details:
Requested dollar amount.
Amounts greater than $500 will be split (for example, $600 will be divided into two payments of $300)

The "internal name" of your Prolific study.
The funding source:
The name of the faculty advisor if the funding source is a faculty member's grant or faculty member's discretionary account
The approval letter or email if the funding source is a department grant or TGS grant
A copy of the IRB approval letter for your study.
Upon approval, the requested amount will be added to your Prolific account.
Click the "Publish Now" button to launch your experiment.
