Whether you are an incoming student, alum, faculty, or staff, you follow the steps laid out to activate your Google Workspace account.
Students
All students (except Kellogg, Pritzker and Feinberg students) use @u.northwestern.edu Google Workspace accounts for email, calendaring, and collaboration. Eligible students can activate and manage their @u email account through NUValidate.
- Visit NUValidate and log in with your NetID and NetID password.
- Click the Create Northwestern Email Account tile on the NUValidate Home page.

- In the Choose Name window, ensure the name is listed correctly. If it is not, follow these instructions to change your Display Name, otherwise click the Continue button.

- In the Expected Graduation Year field, enter the year your expected year of graduation and then click the Create Email Account button.

- In the Success window, you will see your @u email address. Click the Set Password button.

- In the Google Account Password page, create and confirm your @u password and then click the Continue button.
Note: Your @u password is separate from your NetID password and should not be the same.

- In the Success page, click the Done button.

- To access your @u.northwestern.edu email, log into your Google email account via Google Mail using your @u.northwestern.edu email address and password.
Alumni
If you don’t already have a Google Workspace account from your days as a student, you can create a new @alum.northwestern.edu or @kelloggalumni.northwestern.edu account by following these steps to register your alumni email:
- If you do not already have an Our Northwestern account, create one by following the steps in the "How Do I Register an Our Northwestern Account" section of the Our Northwestern FAQ.
- Sign into your alumni Our Northwestern account.

- At the top of the Our Northwestern Homepage, click the MY ACCOUNT tab at the top of the page then Alumni Email Registration from the dropdown menu.

- You should see your First Name and Last Name populate on this page. To register, click the Continue button.

- Once completed you should see the generated email address and a temporary password on the screen.
IMPORTANT: Please copy down for the listed Email and Password your records. Do not close this screen until you record your email address and temporary password. All alumni emails follow the format FirstnameMiddleinitialLastnameDegreeyear@alum.northwestern.edu. Once you log into your new email account, you will be able to change the password.

- Use the generated email address and temporary password log into your new account at gmail.com. After entering the generated password from the previous step, you will be prompted immediately to create a unique password for this account.
Note: If you already have a Google Workspace account, you can continue to use it, or you can choose to delete your existing account and create an @alum.northwestern.edu or @kelloggalumni.northwestern.edu account.
You must manually download any content/contacts that you would like to retain before activating your @alum.northwestern.edu or @kelloggalumni.northwestern.edu account. Deleting your existing account will delete all of the data within it.
Staff
If you are a University staff member also enrolled as a student, you are eligible for a @u.northwestern.edu Google Workspace account. Please follow the steps in the
Students section to activate your @u.northwestern.edu Google Workspace account
Faculty
Faculty members who want to use Google Workspace apps to collaborate with students can request a Google Workspace account by emailing
servicedesk@northwestern.edu.
