Using Duo Restore to recover Duo-Protected Accounts

Northwestern IT has enabled Duo Mobile's Duo Restore functionality for iOS and Android users. Duo Mobile's restore functionality lets you back up Duo-protected accounts for recovery to the same device or to a new device. Duo mobile version 3.17 and higher permits restore of Duo-protected accounts. To use this function you must have iCloud backup enabled on your iOS device or Google Drive backups enabled on your Android device.

When you change your mobile device or the phone number on your device, you must restore your account with Duo Mobile for it to function. Duo Restore is a feature provided by Duo to perform this function with no need for assistance from IT Support.

Enable Duo Restore

Duo Restore for iOS
  1. Make sure you are running the latest version of Duo Mobile on your device.
  2. Back up your device to iCloud. Nightly iCloud backups will include Duo Restore information. Encrypted iTunes backups will also work.
Duo Mobile is automatically backed up in iOS, so the backup functionality of Duo Restore is always on as long as you have iCloud enabled.

Duo Restore for Android
  1. Make sure you are running the latest version of Duo Mobile on your device.
  2. Open Duo Mobile.
  3. Tap the overflow menu (three vertical dots) in the top right corner of the main accounts list.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap Duo Restore.
  6. Turn on Duo Restore by tapping Backup accounts with Google Drive.
  7. Select a Google account to store your backup.
  8. Enter and confirm a recovery password that has 10-128 characters.

Note: While Duo Restore provides the option to enable third-party account restore by tapping Automatically reconnect third-party accounts, this function is not supported by Northwestern IT.

Recover using Duo Restore

If you have a new phone or phone number, and you attempt to log in to a Duo protected Northwestern system, Duo will now automatically walk you through a restore process.
