Saving a complete copy of an email message

A complete copy of an email message, which includes the full header, contains valuable diagnostic information that can be used to troubleshoot many email-related issues. If you have received a phishing or spam message and would like to report it, use the instructions below to save a complete copy of the message that includes both the full header and the message itself. Once you have the copy saved, send it to security@northwestern.edu.

 

Outlook 2016/2013 for Windows

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Double-click to open the email message in a new window.
  3. From the menu bar, click the File tab, then click Save As
  4. Under Save as type, select Outlook Message Format – Unicode (*.msg).
  5. Send the file as an attachment to security@northwestern.edu.

Outlook 2016 for macOS

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. From the message list, right-click the email message to select it.
  3. Select View Source. The entire message with its full headers will appear in a new window as a TextEdit document.
  4. Save the TextEdit document and send it as an attachment to security@northwestern.edu.

Outlook Web App (OWA)

  1. Log in to Outlook Web App at http://mail.northwestern.edu.
  2. Double-click the email message to open it in a new window.
  3. At the far right of the top menu icons, click the ellipsis and select View message details. Full headers will appear in a pop-up window in the middle of the screen.
  4. Copy the full headers into a new email message and send it to security@northwestern.edu.

G Suite (@u.northwestern.edu, @nlaw.northwestern.edu, etc)

  1. Log in to your account at https://accounts.google.com/.
  2. Open the email message.
  3. At the top of the message pane next to Reply, click the down arrow.
  4. Select Show Original. The entire message with its full headers will appear in a new tab.
  5. Copy the message and full headers into a new email message and send it to security@northwestern.edu.

Apple Mail

  1. Open Apple Mail.
  2. From the message list click the email message to select it.
  3. Select View > Message > Raw Source. The entire message with its full headers will appear in the window below your inbox.
  4. Copy the message and full headers into a new email message and send it to security@northwestern.edu.
