In most cases, you should be able to connect to Northwestern's wired network (ethernet) just by plugging in a cable. If you find that you are still having trouble connecting after plugging the cable in, you may need to enable DHCP.
Windows 10
- Open the Start Menu and select the Settings button, located just above the power button.
- Select Network & Internet.
- Click on Change adapter options.
- Double-click on your wired network adapter. If there is more than one adapter listed, select the adapter with Ethernet or Local Area Connection in the name.
- Click Properties in the bottom-left of the new window.
- In the window that opens, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click Properties.
- In the new dialog that opens, select both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click OK to close both newly opened windows.
Windows 7
- Open the Start Menu and select Control Panel.
- Make sure that the view in the top right of the window that opens is set to Large Icons and then click Network and Sharing Center
- On the left-hand side, click Change adapter settings.
- Double-click on your wired network adapter. If more than one adapter is listed, double-click on the one with Ethernet or Local Area Connection in the name.
- Click Properties in the bottom-left of the new window.
- In the window that opens, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click Properties.
- In the new dialog that opens, select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server information automatically.
- Press OK to close all open windows.
