Hardware Overview

Northwestern Information Technology (IT) provides recommendations for purchasing laptops, desktop computers, mobile devices, and other hardware. Please review the guidelines before making a purchase to ensure compatibility with Northwestern technology. For academic discounts on computers or other technical hardware, visit Northwestern University's Purchasing Resource Services.

Additionally, University preferred vendor CDWG offers discounted accessories for purchase by students. Visit www.cdwg.com/northwestern to view headset, headphone/earphone, microphone, and webcam options. Users can refine their search and shop by price to identify affordable options.

Note: Networking equipment that extends the Northwestern Network is not permitted in the residence halls, or any other part of the Northwestern Network. See the  policy, Appropriate Use of Electronic Resources.

Hardware for Personal Use

  • Northwestern IT believes the recommended configurations will last approximately 30-36 months.
  • Middle- to higher-end technology is recommended in anticipation of the use of resource-intensive applications, especially in residence halls. In addition, high-end technology may still useful be by the time a student graduates.

Hardware for University Business

  • Northwestern IT believes the recommended configurations will last approximately 30-36 months. After this time, aging computers should be replaced.
  • Northwestern IT encourages buyers to purchase within the guidelines to ensure that products will have a reasonable life span.
  • The guidelines also streamline purchasing and reduce the variety of systems that need technical support.
