Setting up Outlook
1. Open Outlook and enter your Northwestern email address and press Connect.
2. The next window prompts you with the email address netid@fsm.northwestern.edu, but this is incorrect. Replace the email with just your Netid and then use your Netid password to authenticate.
3. You will receive a Duo authentication request and then you are done!
Connecting to FSMResfiles (Shared drives)
Connecting on Windows
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar
- Right-click This PC. A contextual menu will appear. Within the menu select, Map Network Drive...
- A new dialog window will appear. Where it says "Drive" in the window, select the letter 'R'. This will mount the new FSMResFiles Server with the letter 'R'. Under the "Folder" portion of the window, type in the following server path: \\fsmresfiles.fsm.northwestern.edu\fsmresfiles
- Place checkmarks in the left-hand boxes next to Reconnect at logon and Connect using different credentials and click Finish.
- "Reconnect at logon" will maintain that the server is mounted automatically to your machine when you log in using your NetID and NetID password.
- The 'Connect using different credentials' box is selected just this once to force the logon process to ask for your NetID and password.
- A new dialog window will appear asking for your NetID and password.
- For the initial logon to the FSMResFiles server, you will need to put FSM\ in front of your NetID (ex. FSM\abc1234). Enter in your NetID password.
- Check off the box next to Remember my credentials to ensure that you will not be prompted with your NetID and password the next time you log into your machine. Click OK. This will mount the new server onto your computer. Once you have the server mounted to your computer, you can 'drill-down' through the folders to locate your data.
- You should only have to perform this process once, but if for any reason you become disconnected from the server you can go through this process again to manually reconnect to the FSMResFiles server.

- PLEASE NOTE: If you are using a wireless connection, you will need to launch a VPN client and log into NU's VPN network, in order to gain access to the FSMResFiles server. This also applies if you are connecting from another school within NU, anywhere 'off-site', and/or from home. An established VPN connection needs to be made, prior to connecting to the FSMResFiles server.
If you don't have a VPN client set up on your machine, you can go to the following URL for instructions on how to set it up. It is a fairly straightforward setup process. GlobalProtect VPN on Windows or GlobalProtect VPN on macOS.
- If you are connecting to the server from a machine that is not part of the FSM Domain (network), you will need to put FSM\ in front of your NetID, in the 'username' portion of the logon window (ex - FSM\abc123). Examples of machines that are NOT part of the FSM Domain include personal machines or machines on campus where the user does not log in with their Northwestern NetID.

How to connect to an FSM network printer in Windows via the FSM Print Server
- Go to Start > Devices and Printers.
- From the menu bar click the Add printer tab, then select Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
- Click The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Select the Find a printer in the directory radio button and click Next.
- In the Name field enter the appropriate information to find your printer. It may be the name of your building (e.g., ward, 680, or 633); or it may be your department's name cases it may be your department (e.g., MSS).
- Click Find Now, and scroll to the correct printer for your floor.
- Double click your desired printer to begin installation of its printer driver.

How to connect to a network printer on Mac OS either by IP address or by the FSM Print Server
- Using a printer connected by IP address has the following limitation: Wireless users MUST NOT be on the VPN.
- Using a printer connected by FSM Print Server: Wireless users MUST be on the VPN.
- Instructions are based on Mac OS 10.12 Sierra, and may vary with other Mac OS versions.
Connecting by IP Address in Mac OSX:
- Obtain the IP address of the printer from the printer's user interface or by printing a network configuration page.
- In Mac OS, Apple Menu > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
- Click the "+" icon to add a new printer.
- In the "Add" dialog, switch to the IP tab, and populate as follows:
- Address: Printer's IP Address
- Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
- Queue: [Blank]
- Name: Friendly Name of Printer
- Location: Location of Printer
- Use: If the correct model of the printer is shown here, the OS has the driver installed, and this field can be left as is. If not, the PPD must be downloaded from the printer vendor's website and installed.
Once complete, click on the "Use:" dropdown, and select "Select Software..." In the Printer Software dialog, select the correct model from the list.
- Click the "Add" button. Printer will install. You may be prompted to configure options such as paper trays, duplexers, finishers, etc.
- Done.
Remote Desktop Windows to Windows
Remote Desktop Mac to Windows
These instructions are so that you can remote into your FSM PC from your Mac. Note that FSM IT must configure your FSM PC to accept remote connections.
- Connect to Northwestern VPN. For instructions on how to setup VPN please got to this page Setting up Northwestern VPN
- Go the App Store and download/install Microsoft Remote Desktop
- Once the application is open you need to set up new account:
- Click New
- Enter Connection Name - you can name it anything
- Enter PC Name (to find your PC click here Find my PC name (ex. FSM#########.fsm.northwestern.edu)
- In the Username field enter fsmNETID
- In the Password field enter your NetID password
- Once complete close out that window (click the red X)
- Double-click Connection name
- A black screen will pop up advising you that you are about to connect to your FSM PC - click Continue
