Apple iPhones and iPads (iOS phones or tablets) may encounter an authentication loop when attempting to sign into services gated by multiple authentication steps, most notably those behind Microsoft login pages followed by Duo prompts. This most commonly affects @northwestern.edu Exchange email logins, using either the Outlook app or the webmail version on a preferred browser.
In these cases, DO NOT tap the notification for Duo on your iOS device. Tapping the notification when prompted and switching to the Duo app will cause the original authentication attempt to immediately time out and prevent you from completing your Duo verification.
- On the Northwestern Online Passport page, whether in the Authenticator app or in a web browser, enter your NetID@ads.northwestern.edu (or primary Northwestern email address) and your NetID password and press Sign In.
- If Duo Push is your preferred login method, a 6-digit code will appear on-screen, followed shortly by a notification from the top of the screen. DO NOT TAP THE NOTIFICATION.
- Long-press (or press-and-hold) the notification until an additional menu appears.
- Tap Enter code.
Note: The background will fade into a blur, preventing you from reading the 6-digit code. If you need to write down or memorize the code and the notification goes away, you can swipe down from the top of your screen to open your Notification Center to access the notification again.
- Enter the 6-digit code from Step 3 and tap Approve.
