Google Workspace accounts are official student email accounts, and official University correspondence is sent to them while a student is active. Google Workspace accounts are deleted once a student is no longer active (after graduation or when their NetID is deactivated).
Google Workspace Overview
Northwestern provides Google Workspace accounts for student collaboration and communication while students are active.
Google Workspace accounts are official student email accounts, and official University correspondence will be sent to them while a student is active.
Active student Google Workspace accounts include access to the following core apps:
The following Google Workspace accounts are available at Northwestern:
- @u.northwestern.edu
- @alum.northwestern.edu (Alumni only)
- @kelloggalumni.northwestern.edu (Kellogg Alumni only)
The standard elements of the @u.northwestern.edu email address include your official first and last name as entered in CAESAR and your anticipated graduation year.
Note: For HIPAA compliance reasons, students at Feinberg School of Medicine and Pritzker School of Law are required to use @northwestern.edu and @law.northwestern.edu accounts, respectively. Some older legacy accounts (@fsm and @nlaw) accounts are still active.
Students and Alumni
Most Northwestern students, including undergraduates, graduate students, and some School of Professional Studies students use @u.northwestern.edu accounts while they are active students.
Three schools use Microsoft 365 rather than Google Workspace.
- Feinberg School of Medicine students
- Kellogg School of Management students
- Pritzker School of Law students
Students should not expect to keep access to their existing u.northwestern.edu Google Workspace account, as these are deleted after graduation when University access ends. Graduating students will have an opportunity to transfer their email to another account before losing access.
Alumni who want ongoing Northwestern-branded email should create an alumni account such as @alum.northwestern.edu or @kelloggalumni.northwestern.edu, if eligible.
Faculty
Faculty members who want to use Google Workspace apps to collaborate with students can request a Google Workspace account by emailing consultant@northwestern.edu. Note: Google Workspace should be used only for instructional content and files shared with students.
Student Groups and Organizations
Organizational Google Workspace accounts are available to officially recognized student groups, religious and spiritual groups, and University departments who need Google Workspace apps to collaborate with students. To facilitate communication between group members, organizational accounts will also include a Google Group. These accounts should be used for instructional data and files intended to be shared with students.
