Northwestern Information Technology (IT) centrally distributes Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) versions 5 and 6 to the University community. The site license provides access to RHEL for University owned systems and to personal systems owned by Northwestern students, faculty, and staff.
Computers owned and maintained by the University have access to the NU RHEL Server, RHEL Workstation (WS), or RHEL Desktop versions of the operating system. Personal systems owned by University students, faculty, and staff can be installed with RHEL WS or Desktop versions.
RHEL software installers, updates, and security patches are administered through the centralized NU RHEL Satellite Server. University schools and departments may designate a maximum of five RHEL Satellite Server administrators authorized to access this Satellite Server.
