Software Installation on Quest

Software should be installed in your home directory (for software used only by you) or your allocation’s projects directory (for software used by several people in your group).

Only request to have software installed on Quest as a system wide module if one of the following applies:

  • the application is not already in the list of available software and applications on Quest
  • installation requires root access to Quest in order to be installed
  • multiple groups express interest in creating a module for the software
  • you have encountered an issue while trying to install the software yourself

We provide information on a wide variety of methods to perform your own non-root software installation below:

How to Request Service

To request a software or application be installed on Quest, fill out the following online request form.

 

Licensed Software on Quest

Licensed software on Quest generally falls into one of two categories.

  • You or your lab own the license for the software.
    • Please contact your School IT department so that they can set up a license server for you or your lab. Once you have a license server, please e-mail quest-help@northwestern.edu with the Domain Name or IP of the license server and the port that the license is being served on.
  • Research Computing and Data Services owns the license for the software.
    • Please see the following Knowledge Base article for a list of applications that Research Computing and Data Services controls the license for and how to get access.

Cost

There is no cost associated with making your software available on Quest and giving access to users, but please contact the vendor for the license cost.
