Adding an Network or IP printer to your computer

Prerequisite

Before starting this process, find out the IP address of the printers from the department administration. You can be on the wired network or on Eduroam to connect to network printers on campus. The guest networks will not work for printing.

Windows

  • Open Control Panel and select Devices and Printers
  • Click the Add a printer button
  • Click the "The printer that I want isn't listed" at the bottom of the window
  • Select the "Add a printer using an IP address or hostname"
    • If you are on the Chicago campus and on the Northwestern network IP addresses will start with 165.124.x.x. If you are on the Evanston campus, IP addresses will start with 129.105.x.x
       
  • Select IPP Printer as the device type and enter the IP address of the printer
  • If you are communicating with the printer it should successfully add the printer and ask if you would like to print a test page.
  • Print the test page and check the printer
     

MAC

  • Open System Settings and navigate to Printers & Scanners
  • Select Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax...
  • Select the middle icon at the top of the window that is shaped like a globe
  • Enter the IP address of the network printer that you wan to connect to and select Line Printer Daemon - LPD for the Protocol.
    • If you are on the Chicago campus and on the Northwestern network IP addresses will start with 165.124.x.x. If you are on the Evanston campus, IP addresses will start with 129.105.x.x
  • Use: If the correct model of the printer is shown here, the OS has the driver installed, and this field can be left as is. If not, the PPD must be downloaded from the printer vendor's website and installed. Ricoh driver downloads
  • Once complete, click on the "Use:" dropdown, and select "Select Software..." In the Printer Software dialog, select the correct model from the list.
