How to Add a YubiKey to Your Duo MFA Account

YubiKeys are consumer purchased hardware tokens that can be linked to your DUO account to allow Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to Northwestern account. 

  1. On your computer, navigate to any page that prompts you to login via Duo MFA (i.e. CAESAR for students, myHR for faculty/staff).
    NOTE: If you are already logged in, you will need to use a new browser or a private browser window to trigger the Duo MFA login page
  2. Click on Other options.

     
  3. Click on Manage devices 
  4. After you have confirmed this is your account via Duo login, you will be given the option to add a device  
  5. Click on Security Key to use a security key.

    NOTE: The next steps might look slightly different depending on your operating system or web browser, please continue to follow the prompts on your Duo page to set up the security key.
     
  6. Click on Continue.
  7. Select Security Key from the pop-up window and then hit Next or Continue. The window may look different depending on your web-browser and operating system.
     
  8. If prompted, Click OK when the Windows Security, Security key setup screen appears.
  9. Insert your YubiKey after this screen appears, be sure to insert the key with the circular copper-colored Y facing up.
  10. Leave your YubiKey in the device until prompted to touch your key. Gently place your finger on the Y in the middle of the circle.
  11. Click Continue after the Added security key window appears.
  12. You should now see the YubiKey along with your other devices.
