Live Video ID Verification

Verifying your Identity

To complete a Live Video ID Verification we request that you have the following prepared before beginning your live video ID verification call. Examples of ID, conditions, and how to join a call are in the following sections.

  1. Step 1: valid photo ID (Choose from A or B)
    1. Valid Wildcard
    2. A government issued photo ID from either List A or List B on the I-9 Acceptable Documents list.
  2. Step 2: stable internet connection, webcam enabled device, and good lighting (Must have all three)
    1. Stable internet connection
    2. Functioning webcam or mobile device with forward facing camera
    3. Good lighting, enough for the call agent to easily view your ID and face
  3. Step 3: Join a Live ID Verification Call

Step 1: Valid Photo ID

The agent will ask you show one or more valid photo IDs. All IDs must be current, not expired, and be clearly visible to the agent.

Choose from either Group A or Group B for acceptable forms of IDs to verify your identity.

Group A:

A valid Wildcard (obtained from the Northwestern Wildcard Office)

Group B:

Choose one of the following forms of ID from the I-9 list of acceptable documents:

  1. Passport (US or foreign)
  2. Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-551)
  3. Employment Authorization Document that contains a photograph (Form I-766)
  4. Driver's license or ID card issued by a US State or outlying possession of the United States provided it contains a photograph
  5. ID card issued by US federal, state or local government agencies or entities, provided it contains a photograph
  6. U.S. Military card that contains a photograph
  7. Driver's license issued by a Canadian government authority that contains a photograph

Example 1: If you have a valid Wildcard, you do not need to select identifying documents from Group B.

Example 2: If you do not have a valid Wildcard (do not have one yet or it is expired), you will need to select a single identifying document from Group B.

Step 2: Stable Internet, Webcam, and Lighting

Please confirm that you have all of the following: a stable internet connection, a webcam enabled device, good lighting so that the agent can clearly see your face and information on your identifying documents.

Stable Internet Connection

Ensure your connection to the internet is stable. The agent will need to clearly see your face. The video feed cannot be pixelated, blurry, or granulated due to low connection quality.

Webcam Enabled Device

The device you are joining from must have a webcam or forward facing camera so that the agent can see your face and compare it to your identifying document(s). During the process the agent may ask you to bring your ID closer to the camera so they can inspect it. IDs that are not legible to the agent will not be considered valid.

Good Lighting

Since the agent verifying your identity will need to compare your ID(s) to your face, you will need to be in a well lit environment. Please ensure even lighting before joining the live ID verification call and make sure there are no shadows covering your face or ID.

Step 3: Join a Live ID Verification Call

Once you have confirmed you have met all the above conditions, the call agent you are speaking with will direct you to select one of the Zoom rooms listed below, they will provide you with the passcode.
