NOTE: Debian- and RedHat-based operating systems using NetworkManager are supported for Linux. Other systems may work, but have not been tested with the JoinNow process. If you use another browser, you must set your system’s default browser to Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge before running the JoinNow software. You may set your default browser back once the SecureW2 JoinNow installation has been completed.
Using a GUI application (such as nm-connection-editor or those built-in to your OS's Settings or Preferences application) to edit the NetworkManager configuration is not recommended as they will silently remove settings configured by JoinNow. If you need to edit the settings of the NetworkManager configuration, please use nmcli.
A directory ~/.joinnow/ will be created, which contains your certificate files. DO NOT DELETE these files or this directory.
- Make sure you have set up Duo multi-factor Authentication prior to completing the below steps.
-
Choose which method you would like to start with depending on if you are on campus and whether or not you actively have an internet connection.
A. On or Off Campus with Internet Connection
If your device is currently connected to the Internet, click this link eduroam-setup and you will be re-directed to SecureW2 JoinNow portal to have your device configured to connect to eduroam. This option will work even if you are not on the Northwestern University campus but still have internet connection.

B. On Campus with No Active Internet Connection
If you are not yet connected to the Internet and are on campus you can connect to the "eduroam-setup" Network/SSID. Once connected, you will automatically be re-directed to www.northwestern.edu/network. Click the Continue Onboarding button to start the process.

- Click JoinNow.

- The SecureW2_JoinNow.run file will begin to download.
- Open a Terminal window in the directory where the SecureW2_JoinNow.run file was saved. Set the execute bit on the downloaded file by running
chmod +x ./SecureW2_JoinNow.run
, then run the file with ./SecureW2_JoinNow.run
.

- The file will verify its integrity and prompt you to open a web browser to sign in with Northwestern WebSSO. Press Enter at the prompt to launch the web browser.

- You will be directed to the Microsoft Sign In page where you can enter your Northwestern email address.

- You will be redirected to the Northwestern WebSSO page where you can enter your NetID and NetID password. Click Sign in.
If installing on someone else's device, have that person log in to WebSSO using their own NetID. Never use your NetID to login for another person.

- Complete the login process by authenticating through Duo verified push.

- If prompted if you would like to stay signed in, click Yes.

- SecureW2 will be granted access and proceed with generating a certificate in the Terminal.

- JoinNow should proceed to install your certificate and eduroam profile within NetworkManager. If you are in range of the eduroam network, your device should automatically connect to it. Otherwise, type Continue and press Enter.

- You may now delete the SecureW2_JoinNow.run file.
