Panopto is a cloud-based video content management system available at no cost to students, faculty, and staff. It can be used to record, manage, edit and share video files on any web-enabled device. It is also integrated for use in every Canvas course.
Features and Benefits
Panopto is easy to install on both Windows and Mac OS. It includes support for multi-camera video capture, content of the screen, and any additional content that can connect via USB to your device. Additional supported features include:
- The ability to transmit live and on-demand video streams over the Internet, or record and store them for on-demand viewing by students from a web browser.
- Includes a cloud-based video content management system for uploading, managing and sharing all your video files.
- Installation of a remote recorder within a room allows for automated scheduled recordings.
- Built-in video analytics, a web-based video editor, automatic encoding to ensure your videos play efficiently on any device.
- Automated speech to text captioning of videos
- Integration into any Canvas course allows videos to be uploaded directly to any course site.
- Integration with the Zoom conferencing system.

Enable Panopto in Canvas Course
Panopto is integrated into every Canvas course but hidden by default. To enable Panopto in a Canvas course:
- Go to the Settings tab on the left-hand nav of your individual Canvas courses pages.
- Select the Navigation tab.
- Drag the Panopto item from the hidden bottom section to the visible top section.
- Save the page. Panopto is now enabled in your course.
Rental Kits
Portable Panopto kits are available to check out from the main circulation desk at the University Library (Evanston campus). Each kit includes everything needed to produce a Panopto recording for either PC or Mac, as well as a helpful guide to get you started.
All you need to make them work is a single available USB port on your machine and a valid Wildcard for a three-day loan.
Each kit includes:

- Mini Tripod
- USB Lapel Mic
- USB Headsets
- USB 3.0 4-port Hub with power supply
- USB-C USB 3.0 4-port Hub with USB-C power supply
- USB Presenter’s slide advancer
Remote Recording Hardware
Contact digitalmedia@northwestern.edu if you are the owner of a hardware recorder to discuss conversion or replacement with a Panopto recorder (~$3,000/per). Panopto recorders are priced at around $3,000/per. Hardware recorders are essential to doing remote recording in a room with built-in cameras and microphones.
Remote recording hardware options are available for schools and departments at a cost.
