GitHub provides hosting for git repositories and other services and tools for software development teams.
Northwestern's GitHub account provides the following benefits for all GitHub organizations associated with Northwestern University:
- Unlimited public and private hosted git repositories
- GitHub Pages and Wikis
- Access to a shared pool of GitHub Actions minutes
- Other benefits as outlined on the GitHub website
To take advantage of these benefits a GitHub organization must be associated with the Northwestern enterprise account.
GitHub Copilot
Orgs in the Northwestern GitHub enterprise account can request access to GitHub Copilot Business at no cost. To review the features of Copilot Business, see https://docs.github.com/en/enterprise-cloud@latest/copilot/get-started/plans. For general information about using GitHub Copilot, refer to the user guide.
To request access to GitHub Copilot Business for your org, click the “Request Service” button on the right and include the name or URL of your org.
Setting up GitHub Copilot
- Assign Seats: Once GitHub Copilot has been enabled for your org, you must assign seats to individual users. To do so, on your org’s home page click Settings, then Copilot, then Access, then click the green “Add seats” button and choose the org members who you want to have access to GitHub Copilot.
Note: An estimated monthly cost will be displayed on this page, but you will not be billed for GitHub Copilot.
- Set Policies: Certain features of GitHub Copilot are enabled or disabled on the Policies page, such as enabling MCP servers and Copilot on GitHub.com. These settings can be found by clicking Settings on your org’s home page, then Copilot, then Policies.
- Enable Models: GitHub Copilot can use Large Language Models from 3rd parties such as Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI. To enable these models, from your org’s home page click Settings, then Copilot, then Models.

There is no cost to use GitHub under Northwestern's enterprise account.
How to Request Service
Click the "Request Service" button to the right.
Request either a new organization or your existing GitHub organization be enrolled in the Northwestern account. For new organizations, you must also provide your GitHub username.
