Jabber simplifies communication and enhances productivity by unifying presence, instant messaging, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing capabilities into a secure easy-to-use app.
If you need to download Jabber, you can do so from the Northwestern software site.
After the Install_Jabber.zip downloads, open your downloads folder Select the Install_Jabber.zip file, right-click, and select Extract All After the contents are extracted, select the “Install_Jabber.exe”, right-click, and select Run as Administrator
Click "Run"
Click "Yes"

Log in to Jabber
- When you open Jabber for the first time only, you will see a blank prompt. Enter your full @northwestern.edu email address, then click Continue. If you have a @kellogg.northwestern.edu email address, you need to enter netid@northwestern.edu instead.
- When prompted for a username and password, enter your NetID and NetID password, then click Login.
Connect your headset
- Make sure your USB or bluetooth headset is connected to your computer.
- In the upper right corner of the Jabber Hub Window click the gear icon to display the settings menu.

- Select Options... > Audio
- Under the Speaker and Microphonesections
- use the drop downs menus to select your headset
- use the slides to adjust the volume
- When you're done, click OK
Customize your Jabber settings
In the upper right corner of the Jabber Hub Window click the gear icon to display the settings menu.
- Set Jabber to automatically start when you turn on your computer
- Click Options... > General
- Click the checkbox next to Start Cisco Jabber when my computer starts
- Click OK
- Choose your personal ringtone
- Click Options... > Notifications
- From the dropdown list below Ringtones, choose your preferred ringtone
- Click OK
- Customize your dock settings
- Select View
- Enable/disable Show Dock Window
- Select Position Dock Window and choose your preferred dock location
- Click OK
Manage your contacts
View your contacts
- In the left pane of the Jabber Hub Window, click the Contacts icon
Add a new Northwestern contact
- In the upper right corner of the Jabber Hub Window click the gear icon to display the settings menu
- Select File > New > Contact
- In the search, enter your new contact's name or email address
- When the contact's info is displayed, double-click their name
- Choose the group you want to add them to and click Add
Create a new contact group
- In the upper right corner of the Jabber Hub Window click the gear icon to display the settings menu
- Select File > New > Group
- Enter a name for the new group, then click Create
Add a new external contact
- In the upper right corner of the Jabber Hub Window click the gear icon to display the settings menu
- Select File > New > Custom contact
- Complete any relevant information, select the contact group you want to add them to, then click Create
Set your presence
- In the upper left corner of the Jabber hub window click the Presence drop-down menu
- Choose your status:
- Available
- Away
- Do Not Disturb
- Or set a custom message by selecting the Custom Message option and entering your status message
Place a call
Call someone from your contact list
- Highlight your contact's name, then use one of the following methods to make the call:
- Double-click their name
- Click the phone icon next to their name
- Right-click their name and select Call
Call someone at Northwestern
- From the Jabber Hub Window, click into the Search or call box
- Enter the name of the individual you want to call
- When their contact info is displayed, click the green phone icon
Call an external phone number
- From the Jabber Hub Window, click into the Search or call box
- Enter the external phone number, then click the green phone icon
- Make sure you preface the number with 9-1 for domestic phone numbers, or 9-011 for international numbers.
Create a conference call
To conference someone in to an existing phone call:
- During a connected call, click the More (...) call handling icon
- Click Conference.
- Enter the new number or name in the search field.
- Click the green Phone icon.
- When the second dial party answers, the green Join Conference option will appear. Choose the green Join icon to connect the callers.
- To add additional parties, repeat steps 3 through 5.
To conference two active parties, follow these steps:
- While connected to one caller and the other caller is on hold, click the More (...) call handling icon
- Click Merge.
- Select the Held Call from the available call list.
Transfer a call
- During an active call, click the More (...) call handling icon
- Click Transfer.
- Enter the number or use the predictive search option to dial by name.
- Announce the call (optional).
- Click the green Transfer icon to complete.
Access your voicemail
- In the left pane of the Jabber Hub Window, click the Voicemail icon
- Play a message by clicking the play button
- Right-click a message to Delete or Mark as Unread
Manage call forwarding
Use the
Call Control dropdown menu located in the lower left corner of the main Jabber window. Click this menu to bring up its options.
Turn call forwarding on
- Select Forward Calls to.
- Choose where to forward incoming calls:
- Select Voicemail to send calls directly to your voicemail
- Select another phone number in your list that you've already defined
- Select New Number... and in the text box, enter the phone number you want to forward calls to. You can enter a 5-digit Northwestern extension, or a 10-digit off-campus number. Don't include the 9-1, and leave out the dashes. Click Forward when you're done.
- A small banner will be displayed next to the Call Control dropdown menu as long as your phone is forwarded
Turn call forwarding off
- Select Do Not Forward Calls
Access your Webex meetings
Link your Webex and Jabber accounts
- Make sure you have provisioned your Webex account by logging in at https://northwestern.webex.com.
- Send an email message to the Northwestern IT Support Center at consultant@northwestern.edu requesting that your Jabber account be linked with your Webex account.
- Note that because Webex uses multi-factor authentication, you will need to authenticate via Duo every 30 days.
Join or initiate a Webex meeting
- In the left pane of the Jabber Hub Window, click the Meetings icon
- Click Join to join an existing Webex meeting
- Click Meet Now to initiate a meeting in your Personal Meeting Room
