Changing your NetID password

If your password is still active and current, but you forgot it or would like to change it, you may pick one of the below options to reset your password.

Change your password

  1. Visit NUValidate at https://nuvalidate.northwestern.edu
  2. Enter your NetID and NetID password, then click Login
  3. Follow the password change prompts and click Change Password

Self-reset your forgotten password

  1. Visit NUValidate at www.northwestern.edu/login
  2. Enter your NetID, leave the password blank, and click Forgot Password?
  3. Answer two of your security questions
  4. Follow the password change prompts and click Submit

If you cannot self-reset, you will need to:

Obtain an activation code...

Remotely by verifying your identity

Call the Support Center 847-491-4357 (1-HELP) and select option 1 for NetID support. There are two options in verifying your identity over the phone:

  1. If your NetID has security questions set up, you may be asked two of them at random. If answered correctly, an activation code may be provided to you verbally or via email.

  2. If your computer is webcam-capable, a technician may ask you to navigate to https://remote.northwestern.edu to download a customer-facing BOMGAR client, a screen-sharing tool, to access your webcam and verify you via WildCARD or other form of photo ID.
By visiting a NetID password reset location (EV only)

Bring your Wildcard or other photo identification to the Technology Support Center on the first floor of University Library, across from the Circulation Desk. You will receive an activation code that you can use to log in to NUValidate and update your NetID password. A password change station is available so you can change your password on site.

From your school or departmental NetID administrator

Many schools and large departments have designated NetID administrators who are able to generate NetID activation codes for faculty and staff within that school or department. You may find that seeking this person out is more convenient for you than other options. Please contact your department or dean's office to see if this option is available to you.

By sending two forms of photo ID via email

If you are away from campus and don't have an intermediary, the Support Center will accept a scan of two forms of photo identification (e.g., Wildcard, driver's license, state ID, passport, NMH ID, green card). Send the scans as PDF or JPG attachments via email to servicedesk@northwestern.edu. The IT Support Center will then send you an activation code so you can reset your NetID password.

NetID services take information from the HR or student system and create unified Northwestern credentials (NetIDs) that are then connected with information about each individual. NetIDs are then used as the primary way for people to interact with IT services. Other types of NetIDs can be created as well for specific people, organizations, or IT system purposes.
